On 5 June 2024, Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information Josephine Teo and United States (U.S.) Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo met for a Roundtable on Artificial Intelligence (AI) together with business and tech leaders from Singapore and the U.S.  The roundtable discussed areas of cooperation between the two countries to fully harness the benefits of AI.

The AI roundtable highlighted the existing areas of cooperation between Singapore and the U.S., especially in investments for the development of AI and technical upskilling of workers.  In this connection, Minister Teo and Secretary Raimondo announced a new AI Talent Bridge program, which expands the existing U.S. Singapore Women in Tech Partnership Program, by supporting youth, women and future leaders in critical emerging technologies, including AI.

In addition, the AI roundtable drew attention to addressing the challenges of rapid AI adoption globally, to ensure safe, secure and trustworthy AI development and deployment.  In this regard, the other areas of cooperation will focus on:

  • Cooperation between the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Singapore Info-communications Media Development Authority (IMDA) through the exchange of best practices and other information concerning AI governance frameworks.
  • Plans for important collaboration on advancing the sciences of AI safety.
  • Collaborative activities supporting the responsible design, development, deployment and evaluation of AI technologies, while encouraging commercialisation opportunities, development of international standards, research cooperation, workforce development and industry cooperation.
